Writing task 2

Task: Do young people today make good use of their leisure time? Or do they spend too much time watching television and playing video games, instead of taking part in more productive activities?

Many people, especially parents, are wondering whether their children use leisure time effectively or waste time on detrimental activities, namely watching TV and playing computer games. What is the correct answer to this issue? In this essay, I will outline both pros and cons.

It has been suggested that spending time in front of a screen helps children to gain a large amount of knowledge. Documentaries, for example, usually provide a lot of knowledgeable information which is truly helpful for pupil’s science lessons at school. They cannot find this great knowledge from textbooks. Another advantage might be a sense of relaxation. It is believed that watching movies or enjoying playing games may be one of the best ways to unwind and refresh people’s minds. These leisure pursuits might, therefore, lead to a high possibility of studying efficiently afterwards. According to research in Rome in 2005, the percentage of students obtaining higher marks accounted for more than double when students used these devices to decompress.

Having said that, some disadvantages when adopting these habits are inevitable. If students spend too much screen time, this leads to a sedentary lifestyle which has deleterious effects on their health. By being involved in sedentary activities, children could result in potentially dangerous diseases. Autism is a case in point. Statically, more teenagers have this illness as they avoid communicating with other people. Moreover, many would argue that it is harder to succeed in their future careers. Teamwork skills are of paramount importance nowadays in the modern world and not any employer wants to employ an inactive employee. However, children can swap watching TV or spending on online games by joining several activities such as talking a dog for a walk or cooking. These will help a lot in favour of physical as well as mental well-being.

In conclusion, although I believe that having too much screen time is likely to be harmful, there are some positive points which children can gain. In addition, adopting or changing some other pursuits might help the young lives a lot.
