Agent Application Process

Thank you for your interest in becoming an agent for Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara).


Ara is a government tertiary institution with over 100 years of history. We are a quality institution and only work with quality partners.  We mange our relationships with agents closely and are willing to support those who support us. 


To be an Ara agent you must:

  • Be actively recruiting students from outside of New Zealand.

  • Be recruiting students from a country Ara is actively working in.

  • Have a background and experience in the education market.

  • Have a basic plan of how you will promote Ara in the markets you are targeting.

  • Have the ability to identify Ara’s unique selling points in relation to your markets.

  • Have at least 2 NZ and/or Australian Education providers as referees.

  • Have a clear understanding of the Code of Practice for Pastoral Care of International students and your obligations under the code.

  • Agree to a site visit to your office as soon as it can be arranged.

  • If your business is based in NZ provide your GST number.


We monitor our agents’ performance and there will be ongoing evaluation on the following criteria:

  • High quality student applications.

    • All documentation included.

    • No fraudulent documents.

    • Accurate selection of the path of study.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Ara programmes and pathways.

  • High conversion rates from application to enrolment.

  • High follow through of students from English to foundation studies and/or degrees and diplomas.

  • Provision of communication links with students families.

  • Accurate commission invoices.



Ara will pay commission at the rate of 15% for English study and 10% for the first year of formal study.

Ara does not pay commission for students who have previously enrolled at Ara, independently or via another agent. 

Ara fees cannot be discounted without our approval.


To apply to be an Ara agent please complete the attached application form.  We will contact your referees so please ensure they are prepared to respond in a timely manner.  You will be notified of the outcome of your application within 30 days of receipt of your application.


Should you be successful we will pay commission on any applications received within the 30 day period.
